Sustainable economic growth and SDGs: role of international business

Agnieszka Hajdukiewicz and Bożena Pera

Chapter 4 in The Elgar Companion to International Business and the Sustainable Development Goals, 2026, pp 73-96 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The chapter explores the ways in which international business can contribute to sustainable economic growth and achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as well as the factors that can drive or limit the success of multinational companies in this endeavour. Based on the literature study and document analysis, the authors discuss various aspects of the relationship between international business and sustainable growth and development in the context of global economic, social and ecological challenges. In order to better highlight the sustainable practices of companies and the challenges in the transformation towards sustainability, selected cases of multinational corporations (MNCs) operating on the Polish market are analyzed. The MNCs’ activities may result, among others, in achieving higher levels of economic productivity, improving resource efficiency, and preventing environmental degradation. They can also improve working conditions, including decent work for all women and men and decent pay. At the same time, international companies face a number of challenges in their sustainable business operations that result from various factors in the general and competitive business environments.
