Research on fraud and society: an introduction
Russell G. Smith
Chapter 1 in Research Handbook on Fraud and Society, 2026, pp 2-25 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter provides an introduction to the Research Handbook on Fraud and Society. It explains the rationale and scope of the book and reviews the trajectory of research into fraud internationally over recent decades. It also explains the challenges and difficulties associated with conducting economic crime research where information is often difficult to obtain and complex to analyse. It then reviews the various methodologies of fraud offending and offers insights into the economic impact of fraud on society. The eight-part structure and content of the Handbook are then reviewed, and the principal findings discussed in terms of enhancing fraud research, minimising criminogenic environments, improving early detection of fraud, supporting victims, and facilitating fair, effective and proportionate responses to economic illegality.
