Global disruptive events and the construction industry: strategies for shaping resilience in the Global South

Abstract: Developing economies in the Global South are frequently affected by global disruptive events (GDEs) such as pandemics, wars, climate change, and economic downturns. Many of these disruptions originate in the global north but have secondary impacts on the Global South. The construction industry plays a vital role in economic development in developing countries, yet it remains dependent on supply chains from the global north, making it vulnerable to GDEs. While previous studies have highlighted the industry's economic significance, little research has explored how GDEs directly affect construction in the Global South. Additionally, technological advancements such as artificial intelligence (AI) and building information modelling (BIM), while beneficial in the global north, face adoption challenges in the Global South. This chapter employs text mining analysis on 24 peer-reviewed articles, using co-occurrence and dendrogram statistical analysis to identify resilience strategies. The findings point to construction industry resilience, post-pandemic recovery, and digital transformation for future-proofing against GDEs.
