Corporate social responsibility and performance in construction in developing countries

Abstract: The construction industry faces many challenges in implementing corporate social responsibility (CSR), despite having an inherent social responsibility. This chapter examines CSR development in the construction industry in developing countries. It starts by clarifying key concepts such as CSR, corporate social performance (CSP), environmental, social, and governance (ESG), and created shared value (CSV). CSR issues within the industry are analysed through content analysis. Based on that, the chapter explores how construction companies from developing countries implement CSR practices in the international market. It also investigates the factors influencing CSR practices and their inter-relationships using questionnaires and PLS-SEM. It highlights the status quo of CSR implementation in construction in developing countries and the internal and external factors impacting CSR development. The findings provide valuable insights for construction companies in developing countries to better understand CSR and adopt effective CSR strategies.
