Lean construction in developing countries: the case of Indonesia

Abstract:
Lean construction (LC) has been developing since 1992 and is considered a non-conventional and promising approach to improving construction projects’ performance. In Indonesia, academics have been introducing LC since 2005, yet adoption has been slow, even after the government enacted a regulation mentioning LC terminology in 2015. In 2019, LC adoption began to increase when Indonesian state-owned contractors (SOCs) started to implement it for their projects’ performance improvement and as knowledge of LC became more absorbed by practitioners and decision-makers. This chapter presents the development of LC implementation in Indonesia from an academic perspective through its involvement in introducing, educating, consulting, and supporting Indonesian practitioners and government along their LC journey. Several LC methods and tools implemented by contractors are discussed to illustrate their readiness and maturity in LC implementation. The adoption strategies implemented by seven SOCs are discussed. Agendas for further research and development related to LC are provided.
