Chapter 4 in A Research Agenda for Halal Tourism, 2026, pp 49-70 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter explores halal tourism experiences in non-OIC countries, focusing on Singapore, Japan, the United Kingdom, and Australia as leading destinations in the Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI). It proposes a more inclusive conceptualization of halal tourism that extends beyond food and prayer facilities to encompass broader cultural and experiential dimensions, catering to both Muslim and non-Muslim tourists. Through a systematic thematic analysis of 302 user-generated reviews from TripAdvisor and Google Reviews in four non-OIC countries, this study identifies five themes: Islamic Attributes (for example, halal shops, prayer facilities), Customer Services (friendliness, pricing), Infrastructure (facilities, accessibility), Unique Experiences (attractions, multicultural interactions), and Convenience (family-friendliness, atmosphere). Findings highlight that halal tourism in non-OIC countries is not solely about religious compliance but about fostering inclusive hospitality, cultural immersion, and diverse recreational offerings. This study contributes to halal tourism literature by conceptualizing the inclusive halal tourism experience (IHTE) model in non-OIC countries, with practical implications for governments, businesses, and local communities.
