Revolution and youth
Geoffrey M. Hodgson ()
Chapter 2 in From Marx to Markets, 2025, pp 21-37 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Chapter 2 covers Geoffrey Hodgson's years as a computer programmer, as a university undergraduate, and his involvement in the turbulent political events of 1968. After some months working as a computer programmer, he went to the University of Manchester to study mathematics. In his first year, he developed an interest in economics and Marxist theory. He became involved in far-left politics. In his second year, he switched to a joint degree in mathematics and philosophy. He began to appreciate some limits to rational analysis, mathematical computation, and science generally. The turbulent events of 1968 interrupted his studies, and he only just managed to get a degree.
