Introduction: pro trade, against competition

Emile van Ommeren

Chapter Chapter 1 in Pro Trade, Against Competition, 2025, pp 1-17 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Chapter 1 (‘Introduction’) sets the stage for a comprehensive study of trade discrimination, selective trade protection, and the trade preferences of firms engaged in global trade. I discuss major trends such as the (seeming) ‘return to protectionism’ under the U.S. President as well as the pre-Trump buildup of trade-restrictive measures worldwide, and I present the state of the art of the scholarship on the political economy of trade. The chapter introduces the research puzzle and the factors that contribute to the implementation of selective trade measures by governments. It gives a summary of my main argument - i.e., how intra-industry trade and the globalization of production incentivize firms to lobby for selective trade protection - as well as an overview of the methods and data used in the empirical analysis. The last section presents an outline of the book.
