Discriminatory trade policies

Abstract:
Chapter 4 (‘Discriminatory trade policies’) begins with an overview of the data used to investigate the impact of IIT and GVC integration on imposition of selective trade protection. I give information on the data sources and the representativeness of the sample, which consist of eight economies - Brazil, Canada, China, EU, India, Japan, Russia, and the U.S. - that exhibit large variation in terms of political regime, level of industrialization, and pre-existing tariff rates. This is followed by a discussion of the main findings of the regression analyses. As expected, I find that IIT positively affects the decision to impose selective trade measures rather than more general forms of trade protection. Moreover, the results provide support for my hypothesis about the relationship between GVC integration and the choice for selective trade protection.
