Conclusion
Emile van Ommeren
Chapter Chapter 7 in Pro Trade, Against Competition, 2025, pp 133-142 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Chapter 7 (‘Conclusion’) highlights the distinguishing features of this book and provides an outlook for scholars and policymakers interested in the dynamics of trade protectionism and trade politics in general. It stresses and repeats the central message of this study, which is that politically powerful corporations involved in IIT and GVCs have an incentive to support protectionist policies that are targeted against individual countries and firms. I also underscore that future research could benefit from a firm-level perspective in addressing enduring puzzles in the trade policy field. In addition, I provide a policy outlook based on different scenarios, explaining how this study’s findings can shed light on contemporary trends in trade policy. In the epilogue, I conclude with some lessons learned from the past and recommendations for policymakers.
