Abstract:
When making efforts toward engaging men in violence prevention and gender equality, while well-intentioned, organisations often need help with the superficial engagement of men and the reinforcement of traditional notions of masculinity. These obstacles highlight the complex cultural dynamics at play rather than the shortcomings of the organisations involved. To address these issues effectively, we argue for a shift from mere “allyship”, where men advocate for marginalised groups, to “accomplices”, where men use their privilege to challenge systemic injustices, even at personal risk. This chapter critically examines the intersection of gender mainstreaming and masculinities in the Pacific, focusing on strategies for engaging men in violence prevention and gender equality initiatives in Fiji and Papua New Guinea (PNG). By assessing existing frameworks and models used in Fiji and PNG, we identify the limitations and dangers of tokenistic approaches and propose culturally sensitive strategies developed in collaboration with local communities. These recommendations aim to transform the roles of men in gender equality from passive participants to active agents of change, addressing systemic issues and fostering more profound and impactful interventions.
