Integrating an ethics of care into teaching autocracy

Dara Conduit

Chapter 8 in Teaching Autocracy and Autocratic Politics, 2026, pp 144-160 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: In a world where authoritarian regimes are growing ever more brazen, democracies are backsliding, and classrooms teaching about authoritarianism are beginning to be targeted by transnational repression, it has never been more important for students to understand how authoritarianism works. But teaching about authoritarianism comes with particular ethical responsibilities that are often overlooked, including centring respect and sensitivity for those living in authoritarian regimes, acknowledging the value of the personal experiences of students in the classroom that may include having lived in such contexts, and ensuring student safety. This chapter makes a case for integrating the ethics of care into pedagogical design in the authoritarian studies classroom. It responds to the question that Koomen asked of international relations more broadly: how do we teach about autocracy ‘as if people matter?’
