Chapter 1 in Commodity Chains under Pressure, 2025, pp 2-34 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter initiates a discourse on the theoretical and methodological considerations pertaining to external shocks on agricultural commodity chains (ACCs). To this end, we commence with a comprehensive review of the extant literature on this topic, from which we derive a framework that considers the factual, spatial, and temporal dimensions of external shocks in ACCs. In doing so, we reflect the breadth of the research area and provide sufficient scope for comprehensive analysis. We conclude by presenting a methodological approach (applying thematic, temporal, and geographical scopes) to the systematic analysis of external shocks in agricultural commodity chains for future research.
