Providing equitable quality education and Leaving No Child Behind

Fatima Akilu

Chapter 11 in Pathways To Sustainable Development, 2025, pp 167-180 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The right to education is manifested in various international legal frameworks, reflecting its recognition as a fundamental human right. Yet, millions of children around the world, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, are deprived of education because of social, economic, and cultural factors. This chapter discusses the ongoing problems that underprivileged children face when it comes to accessing education, across conflict and non-conflict regions. It will address the economic and social challenges limiting access to education, including poverty and gender biases. Furthermore, it will suggest mechanisms through which no child will be left behind. Special attention is devoted to the Transforming Education Summit that aimed to mobilize solutions to accelerate national and global efforts to achieve SDG 4.
