In the streets of the Bronx: can unsheltered homelessness be reduced in NYC's poorest borough?

Abstract:
The Bronx, in New York City, reduced rough sleeping by 68 percent over the last 20 years. BronxWorks, a third sector organization, is the primary street outreach program in the borough. BronxWorks took innovative approaches to achieve the reduction during the advent of Housing First. Housing First, an evidence-based practice, is being implemented in many cities around the world to reduce street homelessness. BronxWorks opened non-traditional shelter programs designed to attract rough sleepers indoors. BronxWorks developed collaborations with various entities that connect with the street homeless population in the Bronx. Utilizing a unique staffing pattern to maximize street coverage, the use of technology to help identify rough sleepers was a key strategy. Solving street homelessness requires financial resources and collaboration between government, social services, and the general population. While different municipalities and nations will have unique challenges, it is important to note that reducing rough sleeping improves quality of life for everyone.
