Hunger, stability and alliances diversification: the food security in the Gulf and opportunities to cooperate with Argentina

Joel Foyth

Chapter 9 in Economic Challenges in the Gulf Cooperation Council Countries, 2026, pp 196-218 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Food security is an important challenge for the Middle East and North Africa. In 2011, the Arab Spring triggered a regional crisis, caused by the population's dissatisfaction with the precarious political and economic situation, and the Gulf monarchies were caught up by regional conflicts. Nowadays, due to climate change, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the eruption of military conflicts, the indices related to food security are in worse conditions, leaving the possibility of a renewed social upheaval. Through this chapter, food security in the Arab Gulf countries and in surrounding nations will be examined, emphasizing the impact of various external shocks. Additionally, there will be analysed opportunities to collaborate with new foreign partners, focusing on the relationship with Latin America and Argentina, which is one of the world's major food producers. From the International Relations, this chapter incorporates the political component to examine one of the key issues on the regional agenda.
