Leveraging Generative AI for democracy: detection techniques of trust through decentralized Web3 ecosystems

Igor Calzada

Chapter 2 in Multidisciplinary Movements in AI and Generative AI, 2025, pp 18-34 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: In the contemporary digital landscape, the proliferation of generative AI (GenAI) poses significant challenges to the integrity of information within democratic systems. This chapter explores the critical need for advanced detection techniques of trust to ensure the transparency and trustworthiness of AI-generated texts. The research question is: How can innovative detection techniques enhance the trust and integrity of AI-generated content through decentralized Web3 ecosystems? The findings suggest that current detection techniques of trust, while effective to a degree, are insufficient in addressing the nuanced and evolving nature of AI-generated content. Furthermore, the research adopts a transdisciplinary perspective, incorporating insights from cybersecurity, data ethics, and digital humanities. This comprehensive approach not only enhances the technological robustness of detection tools but also addresses the societal impacts of AI-generated content, particularly in the context of disinformation and democratic erosion in a decentralized Web3 ecosystem. By focusing on ethical AI use and transparent systems, the chapter underscores the importance of creating AI frameworks that are both trustworthy and explainable by presenting seven techniques. The findings contribute to advancing the state of the art in AI detection techniques and provide a model for future developments aimed at protecting democratic processes from AI-driven misinformation within decentralized Web3 ecosystems. Through this research, the chapter aims to bolster the integrity of democratic systems by enhancing transparency and trust in AI-generated content, ensuring that emerging technologies like GenAI and blockchain serve as a force for social innovation.
