Line Caes, Julia Allan, Sinead Currie, Jennifer Dunsmore, Hannah Durand, Lesley McGregor and Pamela Rackow

Chapter 13 in Teaching Health Psychology, 2026, pp 187-199 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter outlines the benefits of a collaborative, interactive, global health and research-led approach to teaching health psychology. The authors use their teaching team's approach to all levels of health psychology training at the University of Stirling (Scotland) as a case study. The team's internationally recognized and interdisciplinary work, from pre-conception to older age, underpins their research-led approach. They outline the key teaching theories that inform their teaching and assessment approaches, and provide detailed examples of a core aspect of their course/unit: translating health psychology theory into real-world applications. The authors showcase how they use their unique geographical context in Scotland, a country characterized by unified healthcare and health informatics systems and government commitment to reduce health inequalities, to implement their teaching approaches. Finally, they end the chapter by illustrating how their programme emphasizes health psychology's diversity and global applicability.
