Designing a health promotion project: Theory, teaching, and application

Abstract: Behaviour change is central to effective management of lifestyle-related ill health. Effective behaviour change, however, relies on rigorous intervention designs based on theory. This chapter begins with a background on psychological theory and behaviour change principles used to explain and modify behaviour, providing a rationale for enhancing undergraduate teaching in this area. Next, it outlines a major assessment in an undergraduate health psychology course/unit that requires students to design a health promotion project based on psychological theory and map theory constructs to appropriate behaviour change strategies. It then showcases the application of this classroom teaching to a ‘real-world’ case example of a sugar consumption health promotion project designed and delivered in-country by health psychology undergraduates to adolescents in a remote village in Vietnam. The chapter concludes with a summary of key points, highlighting considerations for future health promotion project design teachings.
