Private International Law and Global Crises

Agnieszka Frąckowiak-Adamska and Giesela Rühl

Chapter 1 in Private International Law and Global Crises, 2026, pp 2-12 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The introduction explores the evolving role of private international law in a world increasingly shaped by interwoven global crises such as armed conflict, democratic backsliding, climate change, and human rights violations in global supply chains. It examines how private international law can address the legal and normative complexities arising from these crises. While giving an overview of the themes explored in the volume, the introduction challenges the traditional view of private international law as apolitical and technical, instead presenting it as a dynamic and responsive legal field with growing significance for transnational justice. Drawing on the contributions collected in the volume, it argues for a reconceptualisation of private international law as an essential tool for managing crises in a fragmented yet interconnected legal world.
