Abstract: Why do we need a better understanding of federal democracy? This chapter introduces the state of research and various approaches to distinguish and explain this specific type of democratic polity. It highlights the fundamental differences between normative theories that justify federal democracy and empirical analyses that examine the complexities of politics and policymaking in various federal democracies. A brief review of the state of research indicates the open questions to be addressed in this book. Finally, the chapter outlines the book's theoretical and analytical perspective and the basic argument.
