The Loathsome Trinity: FDI, Globalisation and Imperialism

Imad A. Moosa

Chapter 7 in Understanding the Geopolitics of Foreign Direct Investment, 2026, pp 170-189 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The loathsome trinity comprises FDI, globalisation and imperialism, three interconnected phenomena that have shaped the global economic and political landscapes. While they are distinct processes, their intersections reveal complex dynamics of power, economic dependency, and socio-political transformation. The objective of this chapter is to examine the connections among the components of the loathsome trinity: FDI, globalisation and imperialism. Specifically, three bilateral links are examined (i) how globalisation is related to imperialism, (ii) how FDI is related to globalisation, and (iii) how FDI is related to imperialism. The cause and effect relation between any two of the three elements of the loathsome trinity runs in both directions.
