The search for alternative routes
Richard Pomfret
Chapter 3 in Connecting Europe and China, 2026, pp 26-51 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
After the EU–China rail service was threatened by Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and the ensuing sanctions, both the EU and China committed to maintain overland trade by strengthening alternative routes. By crossing the Caspian Sea, the Middle Corridor avoided Russia to the north and Iran to the south. Making the Middle Corridor an attractive route requires collaboration among countries in the Caucasus and Central Asia, and improvement in hard and soft infrastructure for which multilateral development banks may provide financing.
