Abstract: This chapter offers suggestions for future research on employee engagement. It begins by presenting a framework which suggests that our understanding of employee engagement would be advanced by conducting research involving five forms of balance. It then discusses how the nature of the self might be related to employee engagement and how technology might impact employee engagement. This is followed by a discussion of the benefits of more research on various targets of employee engagement, the antecedents of the targets, and the consequences of the targets. Finally, the value of longitudinal research and intervention studies is addressed.
