Chapter 3 in Concise Introduction to Employee Engagement, 2026, pp 31-54 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Many theories have been used to explain the employee engagement process, including job characteristics theory, social exchange theory, self-determination theory, conservation of resources theory, broaden-and-build theory of positive emotions, and the triangle model of responsibility. Theories that have been developed to explain employee engagement include Kahn's theory of personal engagement, the Job Demands-Resource theory, Welch's theory of internal communication, and Saks’ theory of caring and employee engagement. All theories suggest that there are numerous antecedents that are important for employee engagement that operate through several process variables.
