Abstract:
Twin transition is a concept that reverberates in public discourse around the world today. Yet, more insight is needed into how exactly specific stakeholders, including consumers, businesses, public sector organizations, and civil society actors, embrace and respond to imperatives associated with the twin transition. This chapter offers a glimpse into the key issues that unfold at the intersection of green and digital transitions as viewed through the lens of consumers, businesses, and governments. In this context, it is highlighted that while the green and digital transitions often reinforce each other, they may also clash, generating frictions and calling for trade-offs. By reflecting on the rationale, objectives, structure, and content of the book, this chapter makes a case that a comprehensive understanding of the twin transition must address its theoretical foundations, empirical manifestations, and policy implications across diverse geographical and institutional contexts. Accordingly, special attention is paid to how the twin transition plays out across different levels of analysis, i.e. including individual behavior (of consumers), corporate strategies, and governance structures. A balanced combination of insights representative of the Global North and the Global South is featured in the book. The chapter ultimately sets the stage for the contributions that follow by emphasizing the need for inclusive, evidence-based strategies to ensure the transition is sustainable, equitable, and effective.
