Abstract:
The objective of this chapter is to identify if and how SMEs in Poland applied EU funds to foster their adoption of digital technologies in the years 2014–2024. The research sample contained 789 projects implemented by SMEs whose main goal was digitalisation. Analysis of the EU-funded digitalisation projects database revealed that the most prevalent use of EU funds by Polish SMEs is connected with the purchase and implementation of a customised IT solution (e.g., a digital platform or a digital application) that allows for either digitalisation or automation of internal processes. The most common funding sources for SME digitalisation projects were the Regional Operational Programmes in both the 2014–2020 and 2020–2024 periods and the Smart Growth Programme in the 2014–2020 period. The level of EU funding ranged from 81–100% for 71% of digitalisation projects implemented by SMEs. The spatial distribution showed that most projects were implemented by companies located in the largest Polish cities, such as Warsaw and Cracow, and their neighbouring towns.
