Chapter 3 in How To Write an Academic Journal Article in the Social Sciences, 2026, pp 46-55 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Academic disciplines have established methodological norms that their field predominantly uses. Therefore, researchers collect similar types of data, using quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods. Such data is organized in a particular manner that is structured by the format of the journal itself through its requirements and examples. While researchers may have collected a great deal of data from a study, only a small amount of that will be included in one article. This chapter focuses on how scholars can select an appropriate amount of their data for one article. The scholar may have a data set that could span three different articles; therefore, each article focuses on one specific element. This chapter will discuss how to bracket certain data for each article by creating research questions focused on demographics or concepts. Scholars should select several target journals, which also serve as a model.
