Writing the article

Beverly Yuen Thompson

Chapter 5 in How To Write an Academic Journal Article in the Social Sciences, 2026, pp 69-81 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter addressed the specific details regarding the actual writing of the academic journal article. It first opens with lessons learned from writing teachers and graduate advisors via their teaching of academic writing. The pre-writing activities are overviewed, such as culling information from notes, creating an outline, understanding academic writing style, and finally, beginning to write the first draft. This section also covers the organization of data findings, claims-making, and citations.. Finally, reflection on the process, resistance to undesirable industry norms, and reviewing others’ writing for insights into the process are covered. Editing will be covered in the next chapter; this chapter focuses on the craft of writing a draft, which is not yet concerned with achieving smooth text.
