Chapter 8 in How To Write an Academic Journal Article in the Social Sciences, 2026, pp 98-105 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter addresses the stage after the submission of the article: upon receiving the comments of the reviewers. The author responds to the next steps—either re-editing to the specifications of the R&R or submitting to another journal. The journal editor will decide to desk reject the article, often for fit, or to send the piece onward to reviewers. The reviewers will be given 3–8 weeks to write a response assessing the structure of the argument, theoretical frame, appropriateness of citations, methodology, organization, and writing quality. The final decision will be rejection, revise and resubmit, or full acceptance. The author will synthesize the comments into manageable bullet points for editing and will next write a narrative explaining their application of the comments, how they were addressed and integrated, or reasons for rejecting some points. Then the author will revise the paper and resubmit it. The author could alternatively decide to submit their paper to the next journal and adopt only the comments that help the paper universally (not specifically for that journal). After completing this process, it is still possible that a second round of reviews will be required or that the paper is rejected.
