Introduction to Developing Entrepreneurial Ecosystems

Laura I.H Bennett, Don J. Webber and Chay Brooks

Chapter 1 in Developing Entrepreneurial Ecosystems, 2026, pp 1-12 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The entrepreneurial ecosystem concept is under-theorised and there is a lack of understanding of the processes that make it function. This introductory chapter introduces the rest of this book by briefly justifying the claims and summarising our research that sought to identify what makes an entrepreneurial ecosystem function effectively and who does the underpinning work. We outline in this chapter that there is a lack of understanding of the spatial boundaries of the entrepreneurial ecosystem, with a tension existing between the official boundaries of the ecosystem and those that are experienced. This under-developed understanding is further extended to who is inside and who is outside of the ecosystem, barriers to engagement with key stakeholders, how entrepreneurs experience and understand the ecosystem, and how making ecosystem enablers and ecosystem development work visible could justify funding for this work.
