The European airport acquis fitness check and the European single aviation market

Steven Truxal

Chapter 2 in Challenges in Transport Regulation in Europe and Beyond, 2025, pp 20-39 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter considers the more than three decades of European, rather than national, air transport that began in 1993 with the creation of a single European market and the process of market liberalisation that has continued ever since. Some thirty years on, the European Commission is now in the process of carrying out a ‘fitness check’ of European airport legislation. This is an opportune moment to reflect on the process of air transport liberalisation in Europe, with a focus on the European airport acquis, as prompted by the fitness check initiative, and on completing, enhancing and empowering the European single aviation market.
