Intercultural competence

Chapter 11 in Constructive Intercultural Management, 2026, pp 191-213 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: In this chapter, we explain the importance of intercultural competence and cultural intelligence for constructive intercultural management in organizations. Intercultural competence is composed of affective, cognitive and behavioural components, and refers to the ability of individuals to understand other cultures, to communicate their point of view and to think about alternative solutions in intercultural interactions. Cultural intelligence refers to the versatile abilities which enable individuals to adapt to different cultural contexts. Organizations can use different methods, namely, intercultural training, coaching and consulting, to foster intercultural competence-building. The process can be challenging, but it is possible to find solutions by relying on factors that facilitate the development of intercultural competence.
