Culture(s) and cultural dimensions

Christoph Barmeyer, Madeleine Bausch and Ulrike Mayrhofer

Chapter 3 in Constructive Intercultural Management, 2026, pp 35-58 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: In this chapter, we explain the concept of culture and highlight its multiple layers. Culture can be conceived as a value, meaning and solution system. The concept should not be reduced to national cultures, but organizations should also consider subcultures, such as organizational, functional and professional cultures, which are intertwined. Several studies identify cultural dimensions that allow differentiating national cultures. The empirical investigations conducted by Hall, Hofstede, and Trompenaars and Hampden-Turner are major references in the field of intercultural management. They provide insightful findings about cross-national cultural differences and can be used in a constructive way. We also point out that cultural values and dimensions are not fixed, but that they underlie dynamics and constant change. Every culture integrates various, sometimes contradictory values which can be applied in a complementary way.
