Analysis of the impact of renewable energy development on decarbonization in the European Union countries

Abstract: Decarbonization processes in the European Union (EU) should proceed in line with the objectives set out in the European Green Deal (EGD). One of the elements of deep decarbonization is the development of renewable energy sources (RES). This development is driven by climate targets, but also by technological progress and investment costs for renewable energy generation capacity. In this chapter, we will analyze the projected rate of RES development in the EU member states. RES development scenarios will be projected for different climate and economic scenarios. This analysis will indicate what changes in the share of RES in total consumption are necessary to enable the implementation of the decarbonization processes set out in the EGD. These forecasts will be preceded by an analysis of the literature on existing forecasting models and factors determining RES development. The chapter will conclude with a discussion of the implications of various scenarios for policy and decision-making.
