Chapter 2 in India’s High-Tech Leap, Industrial Policy and Future of Innovation, 2026, pp 21-49 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter analyses India's success in the pharmaceutical and software services sectors. It examines how India has become a global leader in generic drug production and software exports. The chapter discusses the role of intellectual property frameworks, innovation incentives, and the development of industrial clusters in driving these industries’ growth. It also explores how pre-TRIPS (Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights) patent policies contributed to India's competitive advantage in pharmaceuticals and how the country leveraged its skilled labour force in the software industry.
