Chapter 2 in Japan, Latin America and the Caribbean, 2026, pp 11-39 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Chapter 2 explores the influence on the region since the 2000s of the United States and Chinese relations as external actors shaping Japan's interactions with Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). It examines primarily United States and Chinese involvement in the region from political and geopolitical perspectives. The United States has been the most influential actor affecting the formation of Japan's foreign policy. China is the actor that prompted Japan to modify its own policy toward LAC, especially since the 2000s. Accordingly, first we decided to show how these two powers have built their relations with the region.
