Chapter 2 in The Rise of Blockchains, 2026, pp 24-44 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter explores how blockchain technology reconfigures traditional organizational structures and business strategies by drastically reducing the costs of verification and networking. By transitioning from institution-based trust to "trustless" cryptographic verification, blockchain enables the rise of Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs) and novel, efficiency-centered business models. The analysis examines how SMEs overcome informational opacity to access credit and how large enterprises utilize blockchain to eliminate transaction frictions. Through detailed case studies in the creative content and food industries, the chapter illustrates value creation via "micrometering," enhanced provenance, and real-time supply chain visibility. It highlights strategic shifts in firm boundaries, moving from competitive isolation to "coopetition" within transparent, interorganizational networks. Ultimately, the chapter demonstrates that blockchain's ability to enforce smart contracts and ensure data immutability allows firms to capture value through superior governance, reduced deadweight losses, and heightened consumer trust in product quality and origin.
