Abstract:
The aim of this chapter is to describe the development of quality management theories parallel to industrial revolutions and develop a concept that provides both the bases, architecture, and consequences of Quality 4.0. The chapter introduces the 11 pillars of Quality 4.0 and emphasises that key technological, organisational and cultural building blocks are necessary to cover digital quality management. The results underline that Quality 4.0 evolves from previous paradigms rooted in detector and control logic, offering proactive, predictive and value-based quality approaches aimed at competitive action in dynamic markets. Empirical grounding to the theoretical contribution is provided with innovative practices from cases of best-in-class organisations (e.g. Bosch Rexroth, Novartis) demonstrating tangible efficiency, compliance, innovation and organisational learning enhancements. These findings further underscore how the implementation of Quality 4.0 does not just modernise quality management systems; it recasts their role as strategic drivers for digital transformation and sustainable value generation.
