Abstract: As historians of organisations have pointed out, managerial practices can indeed be observed in past centuries and, according to some specialists, the origins of Western management can be traced back to Roman political thought. However, it was during the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century that the effort to systematise management emerged. After the preceding chapter dedicated to the forerunners, this chapter explores the initial phase of this development in the French-speaking world, which spans the late nineteenth century to the end of World War II. Five significant contributions appeared during this period: the spread of Taylorism instigated by one of his main promoters, Henry Le Chatelier; French Fordism with André Citroën and Louis Renault; the administration theory under the leadership of Fayol; the institutionalisation of cooperativism and the social economy with Charles Gide; and Simone Weil's spiritualist philosophy of work.
