Artificial intelligence tools for literature discovery and synthesis in research methodology

Kudzayi Savious Tarisayi

Chapter 2 in Artificial Intelligence in Postgraduate Research Methodology, 2026, pp 20-46 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter examines the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in literature discovery and synthesis within research methodology. It explores AI-powered platforms such as Keenious Researcher, Anara, Ai2 Paper Finder, Elicit, and Undermind, highlighting their features, benefits, and limitations. The analysis demonstrates how these tools enhance traditional literature reviews by improving efficiency, comprehensiveness, and relevance. It also addresses challenges in combining AI with systematic review methods, stressing the need for critical appraisal and methodological rigor. The chapter concludes with practical recommendations for researchers aiming to use AI to advance literature discovery and synthesis. By linking theoretical and applied perspectives, this work contributes to understanding AI's transformative role in research methodologies and supports scholars in integrating AI tools into their review processes.
