Chapter 5 in The Power of Collective Action, 2026, pp 77-93 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter argues that we are in a time of upheaval in terms of our basic assumptions about society and ways of being in the world. With reference to the Enlightenment, we demonstrate how the authoritative status of the economic field, and especially an economic understanding of value, is being challenged, and how this gives room to rethink some of the assumptions on which our society is based. We introduce the term ‘a new age of understanding’ as a framework for these changes, and advocate that they both, to an extent, call for and enable social innovation.
