Abstract:
In this paper, the basic food basket (BFB) is compiled weekly by using price data collected online for Argentina from 2016 to 2021. The importance of assessing this basket of food items lies in its ability to quantify the minimum income necessary to meet an individual’s food needs. Econometric estimations are conducted with an autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model to study the impact of the exchange rate, fuel prices, covid-19 lockdowns, and seasonality on the valuation of this basket. The results indicate that, both in the short and long term, fluctuations in exchange rates and domestic fuel prices affect the value of the BFB. Regarding COVID-19 lockdowns, a negative influence is observed only in the long term. Additionally, there is favorable evidence of seasonality weekly, monthly, and yearly.
