Abstract:
In this paper, we explore the evolution of the Argentine banking system before the creation of the Central Bank in 1935, with special reference to the Banco de la Nación Argentina (BNA). In the twenties, Argentina had one of the region’s most developed and sophisticated systems, but its adherence to the central banking system was one of the most belated. Its evolutionary path was very different from the European classic central banks. After 1914—and especially after 1930—a state-owned big bank, BNA, assumed increasing central banking functions, but in an incomplete way, along with the commercial banking ones. In the end, political authorities decided to transfer those functions to a new specialized institution: the Banco Central de la República Argentina.
