Abstract: This paper analyses the relationship etween earnings and education in Mexico through the estimation of public and private rates of return to education. The data base used were the Household Budget Survey 1994 and 1996. The relationship was accomplished by several methods –direct, mincerian earning function and IRR– and by functional forms –utilizing years of schooling or qualification and controlling or not working hours. The conclusion is that by using the IRR method and qualification functional form the best results are obtained. Among the most significant results it is remarkable the return of 14% for men and 15% for women and a mayor return of high school.
