Abstract: This paper analyzes some of the statistical properties of the relationship between CPI inflation and several definitions of core inflation in Mexico. The purpose is to identify core inflation indicators that could be used to approximate variations in the general price level, that is, variations in prices that are common to all prices in the economy. Results show that the definition of core inflation used by Banco de México and a definition of inflation from the CPI index excluding food and public prices offer a good approximation to variations in the general price level. In particular, it is found that the monthly inflation obtained with these two definitions is a good indicator of the future performance of monthly CPI inflation.
