Abstract: In Mexico, the electricity sector is one of the most important for the economy. It is a crucial input for the industry. The standard of living of the mexican population depends on the access to electricity. This relevance has generated, since former Mexican President Ernesto Zedillo's proposal in 1999, an increase in the discusions regarding what reform should be implemented in order to have the electricity sector as a support for economic growth in the country. This paper reviews the current situation in terms of public and private generation, capacity, access and demand. After that, we analyze both its current architecture and the proposals submitted for reforming the electricity sector in Mexico. Finally, we formulate an advice about what the market architecture for the sector in Mexico should be, based on evidence and the analyzed proposal.
