Abstract:
PurposeSustainable practices are a global need in all facets of business; transforming the manufacturing sector towards cleaner and more sustainable production is pivotal. This study identifies and analyzes the potential enablers in Indian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), emphasizing their hierarchical importance and interdependencies that implementation managers in developing nations can adapt to implement sustainable manufacturing to face fierce global competitions and contemporary challenges to perform well in social, economic and environmental aspects.Design/methodology/approachThis study uses the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis approach and the Delphi method to identify the potential enablers of sustainable manufacturing from the extant literature and experts’ opinions. Further, based on the contextual relationships between the identified enablers, their driving powers are modeled using a modified total interpretive structural modeling (TISM) approach.FindingsIndia, as a global hub for manufacturing, is struggling to transition towards sustainable manufacturing, as SMEs face reluctance and difficulties in switching from traditional manufacturing. The results reveal a hierarchical model with incentives for green products as the top-level enabler, emphasizing the importance of government policies and industry incentives in driving sustainable manufacturing. Further, the interrelationships identified among the enablers help in understanding the cascading influences of driving enablers on the dependent ones.Practical implicationsThe developed hierarchical structure offers valuable actionable insights for managers, policymakers, practitioners and researchers focusing on sustainable development, providing strategic implications for clean and environmentally friendly production. The findings reveal drivers related to providing financial incentives and the need for regulatory compliance address important environmental and strategic implications to transform towards clean and environment-friendly production, which focuses on sustainable development.Originality/valueDespite previous studies on sustainable manufacturing highlighting their advantages and technological advancements, the implementation in developing countries, especially in the SMEs, which are the backbone of the manufacturing sector, has not been addressed. The current research prioritizes and maps the interrelationships among enablers for the successful implementation of sustainable manufacturing through the lens of implementation managers' contribution to the practical understanding of its implementation, bridging the gap between theory and practice.
