The Long-Lasting Battle of Chile

Marcelo Dias Carcanholo and Hugo Figueira de Souza Corrêa

A chapter in Trajectories of Declining and Destructive Capitalism, 2025, vol. 40, pp 225-239 from Emerald Group Publishing Limited

Abstract: This chapter aims to identify in the socioeconomic evolution of Chile since the 1973 military coup and the pioneering implementation of neoliberalism in the country the reasons for the social outburst that occurred in 2019. The objective is to demonstrate that the class struggle in this long battle is based on contradictions presented by the implementation of such strategy, at first, during the military dictatorship years (1973–1990) and, after that, through what the authors argue to have been gatopardismo within the democratic transition. In conclusion, it is pointed out that Chile's long battle appears to be far from a decision.
