ISO 26000: a standard for human rights?

Abstract:
Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to discuss some of the issues in the development of ISO 26000 a new standard for social responsibility. Design/methodology/approach - The paper draws on the experience of the author as Chair of the UK Committee on ISO 26000. Findings - The development of ISO 26000 has been fraught with politics, yet it is a powerful statement of the moral and practical issues facing companies and other organisations. Originality/value - The piece offers a perspective of the issues arising from the multi‐stakeholder approach to developing a global human rights standard from a participant in the process.
